Colleagues of deputy Mark Longway say he was nearly 50, but came to work with the enthusiasm of a 25-year-old. Coworkers say it was part of a lifelong commitment to service that showed every day in the work and attitude of Mark. He served for 21 years in the United States military. When he finished his service to our country, he joined the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. Most deputies enjoy their work, but Mark flat-out loved it; he came to work each day with the energy and vigor of someone literally half his age. Mark is survived by a wife who lives in the Tampa Bay area, and two daughters in their 20's who live in Texas.

So saddened by the loss of such a nice person. I can still remember your great smile from High School days as if it were yesterday. Condolences to your family.

Mark,
You were my friend & confidant. I will miss hearing your voice, laughs about Seinfeld, seeing you on your motorcycle, and the hugs before you left. You knew me so well. I was lucky to know you as a friend, and a deputy. Each time I saw you in your uniform, you were so proud of what you do for us. You will be greatly missed by your wife, daughters and grandchildren,as well as your fellow officers, Terrier classmates, and me. All my love Mark...and hugs in heaven to you.

I had the honor of counting Mark as one of my oldest friends. We were neighbors 40 years. He was a special man, loyal friend, and a beautiful soul. I treasure my memories of us growing up. Mark riding his bicycle all the way to my house (1 house over) and just sitting and talking. He holds a special place in my heart and I will remember him always with love. Rest In Peace my dear friend. I love you, Mark.

I went to school with Mark and was friends with him since Twin Lakes Elementary School through Hillsborough. We also hung out in the old Kenmore area neighborhood and he was my first crush and he gave me my first real kiss. We had an e-mail exchange a year or so ago and it was great to touch base with him after all of these years. I was so upset to hear about the accident and his untimely death. Things like this make no sense but I know he is in a better place now. It is just hard on those left behind. I pray for his entire family that they will have the strength to get through this and can hold onto their memories of him to give them comfort.
